More about this keycap set
The Unit-01 Colorway, Translated to Keycaps
This set pulls directly from Evangelion's visual language without leaning on overt branding. The alpha keys (letters, numbers, primary typing area) sit in a muted olive drab—close to the armor plating on Unit-01. Modifier keys (Shift, Enter, Ctrl, arrows, function row) shift to deep violet and acid green, the two tones that define the Eva's head and shoulder pylons. The contrast is sharp: military utility green against synthetic, almost toxic accent colors. No gradient work here—it's hard color blocking, which keeps the set readable and gives it a slightly technical, cockpit-instrument feel.
The dye-sub process means these colors are baked into the PBT rather than sitting on top. You won't get the slight texture variance of double-shot molding, but you also won't see the violet flake off the Enter key after two years.
Why XDA for This Particular Set
XDA profile is flat. Every row sits at the same height with the same spherical top surface. For a theme this visually aggressive—purple and green fighting for attention on your desk—the uniform profile keeps things from getting busier than they need to be. There's no sculpting to distract from the color blocking.
The typing feel: PBT's natural grit plus XDA's broad, dish-shaped tops. Your fingertips land on a wide surface with slight concavity, more stable than cylindrical profiles for some users. No row variation means no adjustment period if you're coming from OEM or Cherry, but also no ergonomic sculpting to guide your fingers home. It's a profile people tend to love or replace quickly—there's little middle ground.
What's Actually in the Box
| Attribute | Specification |
|---|---|
| Profile | XDA (uniform height, spherical top) |
| Material | PBT plastic |
| Process | Dye-sublimation |
| Key count | 134 keys |
| Weight | 350g |
| Stem compatibility | Cherry MX cross stem (Gateron, Kailh, Outemu, Akko, etc.) |
| Layout coverage | 61/68/84/87/96/98/100/104/108 key configurations |
The 134-key count matters at this price point. You're getting full-size support plus the shorter right Shift and extra modifiers needed for compact layouts like 96% and 75%. No separate numpad kit to buy. No missing 1.75u Shift for your 65% board.
Pairing This With Hardware
The olive alphas work with more case colors than you'd expect. Forest green, e-white, and even burgundy anodized aluminum all absorb the violet modifiers without clashing. Gray is safe but slightly dull here—the set wants something with either warmth or deliberate contrast. RGB backlighting is largely wasted on dye-sub PBT; the legends don't transmit light, and the caps themselves are opaque.
Common Questions
Does the XDA profile affect gaming performance?
XDA's flat profile means no height advantage for WASD versus other keys. Some users prefer this for muscle memory consistency across rows; others miss the sculpted guidance of Cherry or OEM. The PBT surface provides more friction than ABS, which can feel more controlled for rapid keypresses but slightly slower for smooth gliding motions.
How does dye-sub compare to double-shot for this colorway?
Double-shot would require separate molds for each color, making a 134-key set at $34.99 impossible. Dye-sublimation achieves the multi-color look by vaporizing dye into the PBT surface at high temperature. The violet and green on modifiers won't wear through— they're molecularly bonded—but very bright dyes can show slight fading under years of direct UV exposure.
Will this fit my Keychron K2/K8/V1?
Yes. The K2 (84-key), K8 (87-key), and V1 series all use standard Cherry MX stems and standard bottom rows. The included 1.75u right Shift covers the K2's compact layout. Keychron's north-facing LED orientation doesn't affect fit, though you may notice slight interference with Cherry-profile switches—irrelevant here since this is XDA.
