The Colorway
The "Modern Technology" theme draws from 1970s-80s industrial design: beige-cream modifiers frame sage green alphas, with dark charcoal legends providing contrast without RGB dependency. This is a deliberately retro-futuristic palette—think IBM 5150 meets Braun calculator, not cyberpunk neon.
The dye-sublimation process embeds legends into the PBT surface, meaning the charcoal gray text won't fade or shine even after years of use. Unlike double-shot molding, dye-sub allows for more complex sublegends and iconography, though this set keeps it clean with primary legends only.
How It Types
Cherry profile sits lower than OEM, reducing finger travel distance between rows. The sculpted tops guide fingertips into consistent positions, which pairs well with the matte PBT texture—slightly grainy, resistant to the glossy patina that develops on ABS caps within months of heavy use.
At 400g, the set has enough mass to dampen switch resonance without feeling bulky. The 1.4mm wall thickness is standard for mid-range PBT; not the thickest available, but sufficient for stability on linears and tactiles alike.
Compatibility Reality Check
The 115-key count handles most non-standard layouts you'll encounter: 61-key Poker-style, 64-key with arrow cluster, 68-key with dedicated del/pgup/pgdn, through to 104-key full-size. The included short right Shift (1.75u) and stepped Caps Lock accommodate common 60% variations.
Not covered: Alice/split layouts, 40% boards, or most ortholinear configurations. If your board uses 1.5u bottom row mods (common on some 65% customs), you'll need to verify against the included keys.
Is this set worth $40 for a first mechanical keyboard build?
At $39.99, this sits in the entry-level PBT tier where quality varies significantly. The dye-sub process and 115-key coverage exceed what $25-30 sets typically offer, while lacking the thicker walls and more complex colorways of $60+ premium options. For a first build or office keyboard refresh, the price aligns with the spec—PBT durability without paying for artisan collaborations or limited-run color matching.
How does Cherry profile compare to what came on my prebuilt keyboard?
Most prebuilt mechanical keyboards ship with OEM profile, which is approximately 2mm taller than Cherry across all rows. Cherry's lower height reduces wrist extension during long typing sessions, though the difference feels subtle until you switch back. If your current setup causes fatigue, Cherry profile is a meaningful ergonomic shift; if you're comfortable with OEM, this is more about preference than necessity.
Will the sage green match my existing setup?
The sage leans cool-neutral rather than olive-warm, with enough gray undertone to read as neutral against black, white, or silver cases. Cream modifiers add warmth that complements beige or retro-styled boards specifically. Against stark white cases, the cream will appear distinctly off-white—intentional for the vintage terminal aesthetic, potentially mismatched for clean modern builds.
